Sensei Joseph Marchal

Sensei Joseph Marchal is a distinguished judo practitioner and a celebrated Olympian from the United States. Holding a 7th degree black belt (Nanadan), he has demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication to the sport. Not only has he competed at the highest levels, representing the USA in the Olympics, but he has also devoted himself to teaching and promoting judo. Known for his technical expertise and strategic approach, Sensei Marchal has inspired countless students and athletes, helping them achieve their goals in judo and beyond. His contributions to the sport extend beyond competition, as he actively engages in coaching and mentorship, fostering the next generation of judo talent.

Coach Raq's journey in judo took a significant turn when she met Sensei Marchal upon her relocation to Las Vegas. Their immediate connection, rooted in a shared passion for the sport, fostered a strong mentor-mentee relationship. Recognizing her skill and dedication, Sensei Marchal promptly awarded Coach Raq the rank of Shodan, her judo black belt. As she continues to grow and excel in her judo practice, Sensei Marchal remains an invaluable source of guidance, serving as a mentor and advisor to the Valkyrie Judo coaching staff.

Sensei Kevin Butler

Sensei Kevin Butler serves as the Head Coach and Program Director for Tri-Valley Judo and Jiu-Jitsu in Pleasanton, CA. He holds a 5th degree black belt in judo (Godan rank) and is a 1st degree IBJJF certified black belt in jiu-jitsu. With over 15 years of experience as an International Gold Coach for USA Judo, he has successfully led U.S. teams as both head and assistant coach across 15 different countries.

For over a decade, Sensei Kevin has been the head coach and advisor to Coaches Raq and David, profoundly influencing their judo careers. His dedication and competitive spirit serve as an inspiration to both coaches and students. Actively participating in national and world championships in both judo and jiu-jitsu, Sensei Kevin exemplifies peak physical conditioning and motivates those around him to achieve excellence in their martial arts training.
